This week's Featured Vendor is our very own ice pop stand, The Stick Up! This is The Stick Up's first year at GSM. We had a lovely chat with founders Becca and Amelia about their awesome ice pop business:
GSM: How did you guys get your start?
Amelia: We've been friends for a long time and a lot of our relationship has been based around cooking and food. We've undertaken a lot of project together- for a while, we were on the hunt for the perfect molasses cookie recipe. Popsicles are something I had been thinking about for a while and one day, we were baking pies and I just said, "Wouldn't it be fun if we started our own popsicle business and we could just make crazy flavors?" And Becca was just like, "Well, yeah, so we'll just do it then."
Becca: And we decided that day to call it The Stick Up.
Amelia: We work really well together. It's a great partnership.
GSM: What does sustainability mean to you and how to integrate that it into your business?
Amelia: We are all about sustainability. We really like to focus on using seasonal ingredients and to source them from vendors as close to us as possible. And that's not only to reduce our carbon footprint and support our local economy but also to really let the flavors be a reflection of the seasons that we're in.
GSM: Starting a business in the food industry can be incredibly difficult. Has there ever been a time when you guys have just thought about throwing in the towel?
Amelia: Hah, well, our very first commercial batch of pops in our kitchen melted a couple of days before we were going to distribute them. We had freezer issues the night we were making them, so we had already been up until 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning getting them done, and then the very next day there was a big storm and we lost power for seven hours. All of the pops we had stayed up making melted.
Becca: Yeah, that was a really devastating day. I feel like we hit a real low point emotionally that day. But we gathered some friends and really banded together and remade all of the pops before opening day at the market.
GSM: What's something surprising about your business you want our visitors to know?
Amelia: I think the flavor pairings we use are pretty surprising. For example, I don't think many people are used to seeing vegetables in pops, and we do a lot of that, which is pretty fun.
Becca: To come up with our flavors, we try to use foods that we really enjoy and that inspire us. We really like matcha and so we had been trying to figure out a way to integrate it into a pops for a while. We ultimately landed on the strawberry-matcha combo. We really see the world through an ice-pop lens now, ever since we started our business!
